The following steps is to be used if the machines aren't part of the same domain but are part of the same WORKGROUP

On the 2008 installation machine:

  1. Disable the firewall. Once disabled you can enable logging to check which ports are blocked and configure the firewall accordingly

  2. winrm set winrm/config/service/auth @{Basic="true"}

  3. To enable Negotiate for all workgroup machines winrm set winrm/config/client @{TrustedHosts=""}

  4. winrm set winrm/config/client @{TrustedHosts="vistamachinename"}

On the Vista Machine:

  1. run cmd as Administrator

  2. To enable basic authetication winrm set winrm/config/client/auth @{Basic="true"}

  3. To enable Negotiate for all workgroup machines winrm set winrm/config/client @{TrustedHosts=""}

  4. winrm set winrm/config/client @{TrustedHosts="2008server"}
